1FAULT

The symptom that looks like a transmission is usually a sensor.

01 / THE METHOD

Test, don’t guess

Parts-cannon diagnosis is expensive and it is why people stop trusting shops. A code is a starting point, not an answer. We test the circuit, confirm the fault, and only then quote the repair.

Step one

Reproduce it

If we cannot make it happen, we cannot prove we fixed it. Intermittents get driven and data-logged.

Step two

Test the circuit

Scope, meter, and live data. The code tells us where to look, not what to replace.

Step three

Quote the real repair

You get told what it is, what it costs, and what happens if it waits.

02 / SECOND OPINIONS

Already been quoted something enormous?

Bring it. A transmission quote that turns out to be a throttle position sensor is a good day for everyone except the shop that guessed.

FAQ

Questions we get asked

What does a check engine light actually mean?

It means the computer logged a fault — nothing more specific than that. The code points to a circuit, not a part. That is why two shops can read the same code and quote very different repairs; one tested the circuit and one replaced the part the code mentioned.

Is it safe to drive with the check engine light on?

A steady light usually means drive it, but get it looked at. A flashing light means stop driving — that is almost always a misfire dumping raw fuel into the exhaust, and it can destroy a catalytic converter in a short distance.

Another shop quoted me a transmission. Can you check it first?

Bring it. A hard shift or a slip is often a sensor, a solenoid or a fluid problem rather than a rebuild. We would rather find that than have you spend thousands on the wrong repair.

Can you find a problem that only happens sometimes?

Intermittents are the hardest and the most common reason people end up somewhere else. We drive them and data-log them rather than guess, because if we cannot make the fault happen we cannot prove we fixed it.
